If you can’t be showing off your Lord of the Rings stuff at the end of August, when can you? Today is a pretty small force that Steve rustled up for a Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game store league last year, but these poor, gribbly boys have had a criminally small number of runs out to play. If only there was something on the horizon that could jazz us all up about Battle Gaming in Middle Earth….
Given Steve’s borderline-obsessive penchant for Tolkien’s work (he’s quite literally writing this while listening to The Song of Earendil, surrounded by images of Gandalf and Ringwraiths, he’s so cool), it really is odd that he doesn’t play more of the truly excellent MESBG, but there’s only so much time in the day, and if last year was about embracing the fun of 10th Edition 40k, this year has definitely been about reliving the glory days of his fantastical youth via Warhammer the Old World. Next year though, it could be time for War! (of the Rohirrim).
Mirkwood, once known as Greenwood the Great, is a vast, dark forest in the northern regions of Middle-earth. Over time, it became corrupted by a malevolent presence, turning it into a shadowy and dangerous place. At the heart of this corruption lies Dol Guldur, a fortress of dark power located in the southern reaches of Mirkwood. This stronghold became the lair of the Necromancer, later revealed to be Sauron in disguise. From Dol Guldur, the Necromancer spread fear and darkness across the land, gathering strength and preparing for his eventual return as the Dark Lord.
The Dark Denizens of Mirkwood include malevolent creatures like giant spiders, bats, and other fearsome entities that inhabit the corrupted forest. These models capture the eerie and threatening atmosphere of Mirkwood, making them a formidable force on the battlefield.
The Dark Powers of Dol Guldur, on the other hand, feature Sauron’s most loyal servants, including the Necromancer himself, Nazgûl, and other dark entities. These characters are not only visually striking but also powerful in gameplay, embodying the relentless and corrupting influence of Sauron in Middle-earth.
